Get together in 2012

Several of us try to meet up at least once a year (though the plethora of 60th birthdays recently has meant this has occurred a little more frequently).

This year we plan to meet up in Portsmouth. In the past we have usually met up on the second week of the Summer half term (many of us tied by school holidays). In many areas, the Summer half term holiday has been "moved" to coincide with the Spring Bank holiday on Monday 4th of June and the Queen's Jubilee on Tuesday the 5th of June ... though as far as I can tell this is not true for all areas! I know this does not apply to many now but there are still people still tied to school holidays, either as they are still working in education or because they have children or grandchildren (or great grandchildren?) at school

We plan to meet up on the Friday the 8th June until Sunday 10th June. I will let you have details of a location later - it may involve a pub!

There are numerous hotels and B&Bs in Portsmouth and Southsea. With advanced bookings one can get very advantageous prices. These include a Hilton, a Marriott, a Best Western and a Holiday Inn, as well as an Etap, the Ibis,  The Innlodge and two Premier Inns. All are within easy travelling distance of everything of evrything in Portsmouth including the places listed below, the bus and railway stations, etc.

Portsmouth is quite an historic city and there are many places worth a visit if you haven't been here before.

If museums take your your fance then:

Portsmouth Dockyard

A tad expensive at £18.35 for site ticket (though could look for party bookings if there is interest) but entrance covers access to entry to HMS Victory, the Mary Rose Museum, a Harbour Tour and unlimited entry for one year to HMS Warrior 1860, the National Museum of the Royal Navy and Action Stations.

D-Day Museum

Quite an interesting museum dedicated solely to covering all aspects of the D-Day landings in Normandy, France, on 6 June 1944

Fort Nelson

One of the Palmerston forts surrounding Portsmouth overlooking the city from Portsdown Hill. This is FREE museum, home to the Royal Armouries national collection of artillery – The Big Guns!

Royal Marine Museum, Eastney

Royal Navy Submarine Museum in Gosport,

There is also Gunwharf Quays shopping outlet  and the Spinnaker Tower

For those who desire the outdoor life, then Farlington Marshes is a large nature reserve to the North of the Island. Portsdown Hill, also to the North of the City is part of the Southdowns, and of course Southsea beach, whilst not quite the Costa del Sol provides can be pleasant place to sit a view the busy shipping lanes in the Solent.

An Apology

As many of you know Chris and I had a fire at home in January this year. We spent a month in a hotel before finding rented accommodation nearby. Repairs to our own house were completed in September, when we moved back in.

I had anticipated that once we were back in the house I would have "loads of time" to spend in catching up with all the little jobettes I had lined up to do when I retired, including ensuring the website was up to date. As it happens, after moving back in to our own house I/we have been kept fairly busy "settling in". Only in the last week or two have we been able to slow down and start tackling those outstanding jobettes.

I have written a (longish) piece in "Student Stories" outlining some of our experiences with the fire (follow this link or the link in the table below). As ever, it is in draft form and is likely to be subjected to changes over the coming weeks.

I have added a few photos (the then and now shots). I will also be starting to add some of the stories that I have picked up over the past few months.

The lists of "Killertonians" has been updated, there are several new names in the lists. There are nearly 170 names in total, but less than 70 we are in regular contact with. If you have contact details for any of the greyed out names, do pass on the website address to them, and/or if they are interested in keeping in contact, then an email to me with their email address (or phone number).

Do please check the accuracy of the lists and let me know of any mistakes - I think the start date for a couple of people is incorrect.

If you have not been receiving any emails from me, or you would like to be added to the mailing list (or removed for that matter) do please drop me a line at:
